In 2020, SAFEhouse Arts was approached by Orlon Ryel with the idea to commission a mural on the front of our theater featuring influential transgender elders. With our history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community and our location within The Transgender District, it was a perfect match! We were able to secure funding from the Office of Economic and Workforce Development through the SF Shines Façade and Tenant Improvement Program and garner support from the community, including the iconic Miss Billy. We then collaborated with artist Xara Thustra to come up with a design that honors the neighborhood and the individuals in the mural. The mural was completed in February 2023.
